It has been only two generations since Arthur Warden seized the throne of Heddred from the Conradines, and now the crown rests on the head of Garad, sickly and weak. Shadows gather legacies of the centuries-long rivalries for power, old betrayals, the endless plots of the courtiers, and the murmur of rebellion in the southern provinces… Catwin, plucked from her life at the edge of the Kingdom, is thrust abruptly into the world of the Court when she is chosen by the Duke of Voltur to be a Shadow—spy, shield, and blade—to his niece, the Lady Miriel DeVere. The Duke’s ruthlessness is legendary, and he will stop at nothing to become the power behind the throne, using Miriel as a pawn to catch Garad’s heart. But the Duke's carefully-laid plans are only a piece of the intrigue of the court, and greater forces than Catwin can imagine are massed against her, determined to eliminate Miriel and impose a new order of their own. If Catwin and Miriel are to survive, they must learn quickly who to trust, and when to turn their skills against the very people who have trained them...

First let me say the story line was well written and the characters had depth. That kept me reading to the end, but just barely...Like other readers, I got a little tired of the constant observations and repeated descriptions. Hoards of long paragraphs just repeated information in different words (or sometimes the same words) were stuck in all over the book. I felt like it should have been a quicker read, but the repeated info slowed down the story for me and made it difficult to read.
I also would have given it 4 stars, but I was not fond of the ending. The teaser for the next book in the series wasn't enough, and left me wondering what happened when she opened the door. The ending could have been a little stronger. I prefer a book in the series that doesn't land with "to be continued" in some way. I would have liked to see this book stand alone, with the reader wanting to read more of the characters in the following books. Sadly, because of the ending and the confusing teaser, I don't care to finish the series.
Overall, though, this is a decent book and the author has done a beautiful job laying out a story. My suggestion is leaving out all the useless info.

Shadowborn Light Shadow Volume 1 Moira Katson 9781484094679 Books Reviews
This was a good read. It started off rather slow, and contains a lot of historical explanation, but the storyline did pick up speed and became quite interesting. But the time I got about half-way through, I was growing eager for the next chapter.
My only problem with the writing style is, most likely, personal preference and is not a fault of this author alone; many authors of late are into the “soap opera”, non-ending endings. Things finally get moving and the pace quickens only to have the entire story and all of its characters just stop in mid-stride and hang in the air, along with the reader, until the next book. I prefer the old style where the primary story reaches some conclusion while an underlying thread carries on and entices the reader to follow the characters into their next problem or adventure.
While the story of this first book appears to just stop, “to be continued,” by the final chapter the principle characters have connected at level that is enticingly interesting. It appears that this is what is intended to make the reader want to find out more. I must admit that it did leave me curious … yes, even me.
The story itself is interesting, and while the characters take a while to become realized enough to jump off the page they do end up being nicely layered and seeing everything through the eyes of young Catwin as she slowly discovers more and more about not only the people around her but also the kingdom itself is interesting; it really feels like we're being taken along on her journey of development from simple country girl to competent assassin and bodyguard. There are occasionally repetitive elements, particularly in regards to character development and inter-character relationships that, while realistic in that very few real life people progress in a linear fashion either in their own maturity or in their relationships, nonetheless does get a bit tiring to read; sometimes you just want the characters to get on with it and decide once and for all how they feel about one another because it feels a bit like an endless waltz of progress/back-sliding at times, but the development while slow is at least ultimately rewarding -- and is set up nicely for further development in the following books. The writing style itself isn't particularly impressive; the author is good at building suspense and at detailing her protagonist's feelings and development, but there are a lot of run-on sentences and minor grammatical quibbles along those lines. When she stops to describe things visually she does a good job, but I personally think the overall story would be improved by a few more concrete details along the way; those we get are good, we just don't quite get enough, in my opinion. Neither that nor the grammatical issues were enough to derail my enjoyment of the story (although it did make getting into the book at first a bit of a chore), and I hope to discover that the writing improves in subsequent books as the author's skill matures along with that of her characters. Certainly the cliff-hanger at the end is compelling enough that I'll be reading the second book, even if ultimately this one seems to mostly serve as little more than the set-up for that -- all very necessary and even interesting set-up don't get me wrong, I just feel like it could have been accomplished in perhaps three-quarters of the time it took to get to this point if there hadn't been so much dilly-dallying and circling!
I must warn you If you read this book and you’re like me, you’ll end up buying all the set! Some thought the first book was a little slow, but I was caught up in Catwin’s and Miriel’s story and didn’t even wait till I finished Book 1 to order the entire set. Now normally I’m a rather cautious reader and will wait till the end before ordering the next in case the ending makes me mad, but this time I threw caution to the wind because I was dying to keep reading. And I’ve only done that one other time, with the “Stray” series by Andrea K. Höst!
In Book 1 Catwin was my favorite by far, especially with Miriel being such a snot most of the time, but by Book 4 both girls were tied in my affection. Yes, you could say I loved this book and the two main characters, and of course Catwin’s mentor/terrorizer, Temar. I also loved Donnett, the crusty old soldier/guard who helped teach Catwin to fight. Hint his words on who to suspect in the attempt on their lives was right on, unfortunately. I have to admit I sure never saw that one coming! ....Sorry, that’s all I’ll say about it.
I felt Book 2 & 3 were just as good as Book 1, and the final ending was much better than I had any hope it would be. Book 4 is not part of the main story so it is less nerve wracking than the rest but it did give a much better background for each of the main characters and I’m glad I got it with the set. If you liked the story as much as I do, you’ll probably want to read it, too.
In conclusion, I love “good” sword & sorcery epics, so the Light & Shadow Series has found a permanent spot in my “Best Books” collection, which I keep on my to reread at my pleasure. I highly recommend it to others.
